I read RPF (damn you, hockey), but I don’t real-person-ship. I love the dynamics as characters, but IRL I don’t really care what they do (except as potential for new fics).

However, I totally ship MEDIA/real-person-shipping. I am vastly amused how something so derided even among fellow fen is the basis of so many sports comments and questions. The wink-wink, nudge-nudge attitude toward some friendships (Besides so-and-so, who are you closest with on the team? etc etc etc), the constant pairing of certain players and asking them about each other—the media sometimes feels like a bunch of fans looking for canon confirmation of their favorite ships. There are even the players who can do no wrong and those who can do no right.

And did you see the sheet one announcer wrote up of all the ways to say ‘pass’? Puck Daddy is even suggesting a bingo board for it!

So, let the players do what they want, continue their bromances, court other people, fall in love, get married, have kids—whatever the hell makes them happy (fic will be written no matter what), just so long as the sports media continues being awesomely and amusingly fannish.

I am choosing to believe that the Hawks suck at power plays because they believe the player difference is unfair and prefer to play evenly. Everytime they score on a powerplay they feel a deep sense of shame for taking advantage of their opponent like that—even if they agree with the other player being put in time out. Because there are rules and they are important.
